Fine motor skills involve refined use of the small muscles controlling the hand, fingers, and thumb.

Upper body control at the shoulder, elbow, and wrist also provide foundational support for the hand.  The development of fine motor skills allows one to be able to complete tasks such as writing, drawing, and independence in self care.

Your sensory systems of touch, seeing, and awareness of movement and body position are important in developing these skills.  Identifying and treating underlying sensorimotor components that are impacting motor coordination is an important factor in facilitating fine motor development.
